Need a creep book to get you in the spirit of Halloween? Here you go! Cas was a ghost hunter, not the type that tries to collect evidence of the paranormal, but he kills ghosts. His father was a ghost hunter as well until he was killed (and eaten) by a ghost. Cas is out for revenge against the ghost that took his father’s life. He follows leads to take out yet another ghost with the help of his mother, who is a witch. This was a fun ride! I love creepy stories that make you look over your shoulder and wonder what each little sound is. I can’t say this book scared me, but it did give me a few chills and even some laughs! Cas was a good lead character; he was determined to do what needed to be done, that is until he met Anna. I loved the conflictions he felt with her situation compared to other ghosts he had met. As for Anna…..I figured I would find sympathy for her, despite all the evils she did. And I did. I loved the back-story and building of truly frightening images created. There are some gory parts in here, so squeamish stomachs beware!

I found the ensemble of characters to be a bit Buffy the Vampire Slayer. We had our hunter (Cas / Buffy), the evil / good character (Anna / Angel), the popular girl (Carmel / Cordielia) and the witchy nerd with comic relief (Thomas / Willow and Xander in one). I guess Thomas’s grandfather could have been Giles….lol. I loved it though, the unlikely combination of friends fighting evil. The witty lines in the story had me cracking up! There was a reference to Ghostbusters and being Venkman had me chuckling.

I had read The Girl from the Well first (which came out a couple years after this and I recommend), and many people referenced this book in their reviews, now I see why the connections were made. It has a similar relationship between the characters. I loved it and already grabbed a copy of its sequel! 4.5 stars.
