Yeah. Okay. This sort of bummed me out. And, I guess, that's like life, right? A bummer? It's like Plath says “If you expect nothing from anybody, you’re never disappointed.” and that turned our alright, right?

Yeah.. bummed.

I loved.. hated, but loved.. Eleanor & Park.

I'm bathing in luke warm water here. No jealousy, no despair, no... anything.. really. I gave this four stars just because of the run over love of E&P.

I'm a little bit (or maybe even more) in love with this book. I finished it yesterday but have been rereading and rereading my favorite scenes. It is such a good example of how layered, meaningful, and well-written YA contemporary fiction can be. It is such a homage to book, writing, Harry Potter, and fanfiction along with dealing with sister relationships (twins!), social anxiety, and starting college. So....I am torn with this book; similar to Eleanor and Park. Rainbow Rowell is the master at writing dialogue and you find yourself laughing out loud and cringing inside from the written conversations. It's great and I LOVE the dialogue. I liked the book (although it is blasphemous for Harry Potter purists like myself who believe that the story should never be tampered with), but I didn't like the fan fiction stuff - I thought it was a little creepy and I ended up just skipping over it. I liked the book (although it is blasphemous for Harry Potter purists like myself who believe that the story should never be tampered with), but I didn't like the fan fiction stuff - I thought it was a little creepy and I ended up just skipping over it. The book does contain adult situations and language (f-bombs all throughout, so I won't recommend for YA readers), but... the adult situations also make it a thought provoking story because Cath is trying to find herself in college life expected to experience lifestyles that she may not want to participate. Rainbow Rowell has a way of putting you inside the persons head. She is fantastic in writing characters; you know these people and they become your friends/enemies.

A shy girl trying to find her way around college, a blunt (but very funny) room mate that makes her participate in life, a father with mental illness, a twin sister who is binge drinking and a mother that left them as children. There are a lot of issues that are discussed throughout the book. She meets a boy who is very sweet and helps her understand what mentally normal is. You have to love Levi, and he makes you like the story. I have read some reviews that thought Levi was an older boy who takes advantage of Cath. Levi is only 2-3 years older, but is much wiser, loves life and is settled with who he is, rather than the normal freshman frat kid. I saw him as a patient, sweet person who cares deeply for Cath (and other people) and wants to help her feel comfortable with herself, helping her realize that she doesn't need to change to make others like her. Although I can't agree with where their relationship ends up, I think Levi is a lifesaver for Cath. Opposites do attract.

FOR MY YOUNG AND RELIGIOUS FRIENDS: There are some intimate scenes (not in written detail but in Caths head) between Levi and Cath that include moments of firsts: flirting, hand holding, kissing and more. It is not graphic like other popular YA series that I have read (and put down), but you feel Cath's feelings of what is happening around her. Some might be offended by this. ...more
