2022 is the year where for some reason, I am reading a lot of sf/fantasy short fiction - ok, the "some reason" might be me really understanding the whole treasure cache which is online magazines but it has also led me to pick up some anthologies which have been languishing for a very long time in my TBR. "The Calorie Man" is incredible. A world strangled by food monocultures and IP.
"Pop Squad": humans can live forever, can spend as long as they please perfecting their art, learning, becoming incredible athletes. But in exchange, having children is illegal. Stunning. (Can't help but think that the answer is space travel)
"Yellow Card Man" is the best of the bunch. Absolutely chilling tale of crushing poverty. Set in the same world as "The Calorie Man".

Bacigalupi writes finely crafted tales that explore a whole lot of what-if scenarios experienced by real people. Unfortunately, all of these possibilities are bleak and angry, digging into the imminent collapse of society, the melting dissolution of our intellectual capabilities, and most frequently the death of fertility and continuance of the human race. Really well written, but unrelentingly uncomfortable.

it's taking me ages to get through this audiobook, in fact I have listened to three installments of the Baroque Cycle in between stories! It's not that it's not good, it's just that every story is so intense and full of things to think about that I can't take more than one or two at a time.
