The Annotated Hobbit is a really great edition of the book for fans of Tolkien, or anyone studying Tolkien's work. It's full of useful annotations, including the references to Tolkien's sources and inspiration, and the history of corrections to the book (particularly the ones bringing it in line with the Lord of the Rings geography and canon). I read this over a period of several months to my daughter at bedtimes. Although I've read The Lord of the Rings, I've never gotten around to this. Perhaps it's because I'm not particularly a fan of Tolkien. He's one of those authors who is very popular and, I feel, quite overrated. I probably never would have read this for my own benefit and now having read it my opinion of Tolkien remains unchanged.

Before I read this, I sometimes made fun of fantasy, especially epic fantasy. I thought it was silly and formulaic. I suppose my views were highly influenced by the less than stellar series started by Eragon. Combine that poor introduction to the genre with my belief that I was too much of a science fiction girl to like fantasy, and I put off the reading of fantasy novels.
