Re-read. Much better than I remembered. Written in 1949 Orwell is very, very early in some ideas.
The interrogation: Orwell is very ahead of his time here: electroshock was invented in 1938 but as a therapy. lobotomy was invented in 1935 as therapy, and CIA Project MKUltra began in 1953. The book was written in 1949. There had been only two totalitarian regimes before that: Stalin's USSR and Nazi Germany. (I don’t even think I can count them now).
