Well, I ended up quite enjoying this. I wasn't sure I would, partly because just from the summary I could tell it was one of those where they make up weird "alien" names that are hard to keep track of. But I pushed past that and really liked the world-building. I was particularly intrigued by the approach to gender of the Radch - with the main character defaulting to calling everyone "she", I really noticed my tendency to default to assuming people are male if their gender hasn't been specified.

Thematically, Ancillary Justice is basically a masterpiece. It's centered on completely fascinating questions of morality and identity, and what exactly happens after you've done something for which you will never forgive yourself. It's about the shattering of identity in the aftermath, and about piecing together parts of your person again even when you're not sure that you are one, or ever were.

I’m rereading these because a new book set in this world is coming out soon! Plus they’re awesome! The central character here is a giant spaceship in the body of a human; once she was a big spaceship with all sorts of capabilities and a bunch of human bodies, but now this one is the last piece left.
