The diary of a teenage girl living in a crumbling castle - romantic, cozy, and reminiscent of Jane Austen.

A charming little book, a sort of Jane Austen-esque coming of age story about a teenage girl in 1930s England. The narrator keeps a captivating journal about her family and neighbors, the dilapidated castle she lives in, and the events that occur over the course of about six months of her life. Really just a lovely little book.

A precocious narrator who is not so precocious as to be annoying and unrealistic. I like the movie, the book is even more satisfying, seeing the layers of yearning and class and love of their castle life blending together, and having a loving and friendly relationship with their stepmother is a welcome change from the norm in fiction in my reading experience.
