This was a completely delightful book.
Carry On is a bit like Jaspar Fforde, a bit like Lev Grossman, but very rarely like JK Rowling. Although there are definite similarities between the two worlds, Rowell shows us a magical community through the eyes of young adults, not children, who each have their own differing viewpoints and motives. She has created a unique and internally consistent system of magic with just enough worldbuilding to feel realistic without straining the narrative. It all fe ...more

Me, the first 150 pages of this book: *nitpicking all the ways it’s different from Harry Potter, cringing at some things (the spells being just cliches?)*
Me, the second Baz shows up: “this is the best book I’ve ever read.”
Seriously though, it really feels like you’re waiting for sooo long, and when nothing is really happening (and before you’re acclimatized, you’re like “is this just a worse rip-off of Harry Potter). But once Baz shows up and jump-starts the plot (and the shipping!), the rest of ...more

I LOVE THIS BOOK!!
It starts a little slowly, because there's a lot of background to fill in, but once it got going I just didn't want to stop reading. The characters are really great (I love Baz!) and the world is fully developed and realised, easy to get sucked into and without any holes to jerk you back to reality. I was also really surprised at the accuracy of he English geography (it even has my hometown woooo) and culture (although lol @Penny, it's never too early for tea). ...more

I really liked this book, but then I went in wanting to like it really badly. I love the author's other books and I love the Harry Potter so I couldn't resist this. First time in a long time that I've paid full price for a hardcover and it was worth it. Interesting ideas about "chosen ones" and magic and love.
