This book has definitely catapulted me back into historical fiction. I forgot how much I love the genre. While this novel isn’t the easiest read, it’s very immersive. I couldn’t put it down as I was fully convinced I was a 54 year old midwife living in the late 1700s. The whole journey was enlightening but also disturbing. I feel like I gained a full life of experience in just 400 pages. I also feel like I aged decades. I’m uncomfortable and tired but don’t regret what it took to get here.

Wow. So many good elements in this story telling. The writing style was simple, but not short on details. The unraveling of this story was stressful, frustrating, and disturbing, but had many rewarding and captivating moments.

The book begins with a murder, the mystery of it is threaded throughout, and the end has a satisfying reveal. But the heart of the story is beyond a whodunit. It’s about justice, and the unheard voices/mistreatment of women in that century.
