This is my personal favorite among the Sherlock Holmes novels of Doyle's original canon; the date cited below, 1969, is my best guess as to the first time I read it, but I've read it, I think, three times altogether! With its pseudo-supernatural element, and the well-realized ambiance of the isolated old family mansion and the surrounding lonely, quicksand-pocked moor, it's easily the most Gothic of the author's novels (at least, of the ones I've read).
