This was not only the genre's first alien-invasion yarn, but remains one of the most gripping and realistic treatments of the theme. Personally, I would rank it as Wells' best novel. (The passage of time, of course, has given it an interesting twist; rather than becoming "dated," it essentially acquires an alternate-world quality, so that we're seemingly looking in on a parallel Earth that was invaded by Martians in 1899.
