The Shadow Throne (Ascendance, #3) in The False Prince Re-read-a-thon

Is it lame that I check back here periodically, just to see if anyone has posted a "I'm waiting . . . " thread? Just so I can breath in the fact that I'm not the only person who doesn't have this book yet? Because I need it. Need. Really do.

I pre-ordered Shadow Throne months before it came out, and tracked the shipping status obsessively until it showed up at my door February 25 (for non-fanatics, that would be the day it came out). I pre-ordered Shadow Throne months before it came out, and tracked the shipping status obsessively until it showed up at my door February 25 (for non-fanatics, that would be the day it came out). I essentially shut myself away from the rest of the world, and read the entire book in a few intense sittings. I closed it with a sigh at 11:00 pm, and fell asleep thinking of Imogen, Jaron, Tobias, Roden, and oh so many more.

But after the initial phase of waiting-induced joy was over, what did I think? Well, I thought it was a good ending to a great trilogy. I thought that there was a little too much running around; it's one of those books where you can skip the entire middle when you're re-reading, because you know what happens. The reason I loved the first book was because the entire thing, cover to cover, can be devoured over and over again and it never gets old. I knew instinctively that Shadow Throne would never reach that bar, which was one reason I stalled myself a bit when I was reading it for the first time - I didn't want to reach the end, and have to admit that maybe it wasn't quite up to the hype I'd built up around it.

The first book enthralled me with a twist that I had seen coming from the first time I read the blurb, but at the same time still thrilled and startled me. The second book wasn't quite as solid, but if I LOVED the first book then I loved (lower caps) the second book. Shadow Throne is harder to place. I LOV-iked it. LOVED some of it, lower case "liked" some. That's not to say it's a bad book, because I've "liked" books that were still extremely good (no examples come to mind, but they do exist! :P)

In the end, if you read/loved False Prince, then it's kind of a given that you have to read Runaway King. If you got that far, then there is no possible way you are not going to read Shadow Throne. And really, it would have been extremely hard for the wonderful Jennifer Nielsen to do any better than she did, with the extremely difficult task of tying up a trilogy with the bar set so high by her own start to the series, False Prince. ...more

It was a good finale for this trigoly. Although, I have to admit that I got bored in some parts, but in general, the reading pleased me. It was a good story. We got to see Jaron in his final adventure and also the fate of his friends. I ended up liking Tobias and Roden.
Definitely, recommended.

Wow, what a ride! I am pretty sure that this is the ultimate middle grade medieval fantasy adventure. High stakes, close calls, and an insane conclusion. Well done, Jennifer Nielsen!
