This is my favorite of the "classic" Richard III novels. The story is told from the point of view of various players in the story, including Richard himself. It's a sympathetic portrait that nevertheless portrays Richard as a real person. I especially like the fact that his wife, Anne, is a strong, intersting character and not the simpering, sickly second choice who so often appears in other versions. Some Touch of Pity (US title is The Broken Sword) covers a relatively short period of history, beginning in 1483 just before the death of King Edward IV and ending with Richard III’s defeat by Henry Tudor at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485.
