I really enjoyed this book. I honestly never wanted to put it down.

The world building was great and all of the characters were well-developed and seemed really real. I have a few things about Sarah J. Mass’s style of writing that I don’t like. I feel as though she uses former and latter way too much and this has been a common thing through all the books of hers that I’ve read. I also don’t like it when she runs the same three words together in a row when it’s not necessary. It’s on thing if you I really enjoyed this book. I honestly never wanted to put it down.

I feel as though she uses former and latter way too much and this has been a common thing through all the books of hers that I’ve read. I also don’t like it when she runs the same three words together in a row when it’s not necessary. It’s on thing if your character is in the middle of a freak out and they’re thinking no, no, no, no. It’s another thing, in my opinion, when they’re just having a thought and there’s always a moment where one word repeats itself (i.e. nothing, nothing, nothing) in the middle of a sentence. To me, one nothing should suffice.

Otherwise, I’m really happy that I decided to read this book. She ALMOST made me cry at the end.

If I’m being honest, my favorite thing about this book wasn’t even Hunt and Bryce’s relationship, although I love that too. It was Danika and Bryce’s relationship/friendship. It was so beautiful and heart warming. I wish I had a best friend relationship like theirs. No matter what, Bryce had unwavering faith, trust, and love in Danika and that’s what a true friendship is all about. And their saying to each other….Light it Up. When Danika said that at the end of the book, I’ve never loved a phrase more.

I also really liked Bryce and Ruhn’s relationship. Even though they were always sniping at each other, that’s honestly how siblings are. You fight and you make up. I thought it made the book even more realistic.

NOW, for Hunt and Bryce’s relationship. I simply just love Hunt. I know Bryce says she doesn’t like alphaholes, but I also feel like she’s low key lying because Hunt is somewhat an alpha hole and there’s no way one could not be attracted to him. She came around eventually. I really liked the pace of their relationship and how well they get to know each other. This is definitely a slow burn romance. Usually with a book this large and with a slow burn romance, you’re like get together already, but this time around I really enjoyed seeing them slowly realize their feelings.

As far as the story itself goes, I really enjoyed the mystery of it all. There was one thing I guessed, but otherwise I was really shocked at the end. The story flowed really well and unfolded nicely. I would say that I wish she’d been a little more forthcoming about certain things. For example, Bryce and Ruhn’s relationship is damaged because of some huge argument they had when they were teenagers, but we never find out what really happened. Only bits and pieces. Another thing I wish she’d explained sooner was what happened that one night with Bryce and Danika. In that case, I know why she held out, but part of it could’ve been divulged sooner. Things like these just left me really confused at times and like I was missing pieces of the story.

Recommendation: This is really good read that I would recommend to everyone who likes fantasy, paranormal romance, and mystery.

I love books with a multi-layered story. And this, for me, had it in spades!! The story starts out strong with multiple characters and their storyline. Granted, it makes for a much longer book but I loved every moment of it. I laughed and I cried and my heart ached for one of the main characters, Bryce. So much sacrifice and love for others but she couldn’t see her own worth due because of how others treated her. I loved it all to the very last page!!

There was too much world building and I couldn’t remember who was who or what was whatI had to go back and re-read several portions just to make sure I was reading things properly. Don’t get me wrong, I liked the characters and their personal growth throughout the story but the history of Crescent City itself & world building took over and I just wanted to skim because it was so redundant in conversations.
