*Grabs mic and clears throat* ladies and gentlemen welcome to my review of “A pound of Flesh” I stumbled upon this by pure coincidence and preordered that baby. I’m ecstatic that I did.

In a very long time I haven’t read something so refreshing, unique and tailored to what I want to read in a book. For me and please note that is just my personal opinion it was very well written. On a dark and dangerous night a little girl loses her father and is saved by a little boy who can smell peaches. Fast forward 16 years.

Kat Lane is a teacher and works at Arthur Kill State Pen. Kat teaches Eng. Lit. So far her lessons are going well until Wes Carter walks in to her classroom.

Prison number 081056 or Wes Carter is in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. He took the fall for his best friend. He is angry at the world and more himself than anything else and can’t show his feelings. Carter is a walking contradiction. He is intelligent, funny and loyal.

His record doesn’t speak for him as he has been labeled “a menace to society or an intelligent individual who lacks self-confidence to assert and channel it. But there was also something dark and treacherous as well as desperation and needed to see that he had value.
Kat and Carter are hate at first sight. There is no insta love although they recognize something they can’t quite put their finger on it.

Miss Lane was under his skin, and he wasn’t sure whatever to be disturbed or delighted about it.
Where her tongue traveled the length of the black neck tattoo that was teasing her mercilessly.

Carter doesn’t know who Kat is until Jack calls her Katherine. Carter falls into a panic attack but before he does he knows the truth.
“Jack” He whispered. “She’s my peaches.” Thought about her every day since he’s been elven years old.

In the end Carter takes the deal that Kat offers him to tutor him one on one. During their sessions although there was a guard they became close. Carter gets parole under but only if his tutoring sessions continue. If they start a relationship, Kat could lose her job at Kill and with Carter and Carter would be screwed and have to go back to jail. This topic kept on popping up throughout the book but Kat made an easy choice. What I liked was that the book focused on their personal issues as well as the issues that they had together.

There were a lot of parallels to what Kat was teaching Carter and to what they were experiencing. I think that the main issue that bothered me is that no one apart from Kat looked beyond the surface. I liked how the characters developed and there was character development. The lines begin to blur and you can’t tell where it should stop. In parts it was sinfully forbidden but not that kind of forbidden.

Carter found it hard to declare his feelings so he let Kat read his diary. So touching. This isn’t actually in the book but it pretty much sums it up.

“My life used to be full of everything. Now if you aren't with me I haven't a thing in the world.”
You could feel the love that they had for one another.

Theirs was a love beyond words, beyond reason, beyond even the two of them. It was indeed indescribable, inexplicable, but unbreakable and unyielding.

A pound of flesh is a debt to be paid off and let us be honest here. We have all had to pay a debt to someone or someone to us. So how far would you go?

Kat’s Mum is a piece of work. Who needs enemies when you have friends like Beth and Adam? As small as the world is the company that Carter couldn’t get access to belonged to Austin (also a major hypocrite and douchecanoe) and Adam. They were all in on it and didn’t tell Kat at all. Her mum is a hypocrite and to think that she had similar experiences. Pot please meet kettle. Not to mention judgmental. I did love Nana Boo though what a gem. Ben was my hero of the day for what he did for Carter to get his company back.

When I was at school we had to read one of Shakespeare’s plays. Oh be still my beating heart. Luckily enough our class got Macbeth which was enjoyable. I managed to avoid Romeo and Juliet as well as The Merchant from Venice. Now, I wouldn’t say that I’m going to run out and buy the play. But I did love that specific literature was used and yes I did look it up to double check.

I noticed that there were some negative thoughts on this book and each person is entitled to their own opinion but I would like to make a couple of remarks. Although Carter said that he would stay when Kat had to talk to her mother. Was he being a coward? I don’t think so if you don’t know your own self-worth then it isn’t that easy. Kat also had to learn to fight her own battles when it came to her mother.

There is no cheating or violence.

Will there also be a book with Paul and Cam.

I enjoyed this story a lot. What makes it very good are the characters. Kat is a very stubborn and independent minded young woman and Carter was just so endearing. I just wanted to hug him and tell him everything will be okay. What kept this story from being 5 stars for me is the pacing of the story. It was a little slow for me. I think Kat and Carter lacked communication for far too long AND the whole fobidden lover part never really played out like I expected. Overall though, I lik ...more

Extremely well-written and intriguing story.

I bought this book on release day because of the rave reviews I was seeing from bloggers on Facebook. I love a good student/teacher romance, so I just couldn't say no. Though I'm not sure I fell as deeply in love with the book as some others did, it was undeniably a great read.
