First in a news British police procedural series featuring Scotland Yard Detective Duncan Kincaid and his assistant, Sargeant Gemma Jones. This struck me as a poor man’s Elizabeth George; the relationship between the two leads reminded me very much of Detective Thomas Lynley and his sergeant Barbara Havers, albeit decidedly less complicated. I read this book years ago & read the first few books in the Kincaid-James series before getting so behind in it that I stopped completely. For a while now, I've been wanting to start over & finally got the chance.

This book provides a tempting introduction to the main characters in the series. Kincaid is the Scotland Yard wunderkind, fast tracked for promotion who also seems to be a good guy, relatable, not a prima donna. Detective Sergeant James, the divorced single mom of a toddler, is good a ...more

It is hard to believe that Deborah Crombie, the author of this great story of a British detective on vacation at an English time share, is actually a north Texas native educated at Tarrant County Community College.
