August 1920 — A Major Clayton has died and one of the servicemen who knew him planned to go the funeral - only he finds himself unable to do so when he sees another attendee, Capt. Hutchinson, on the scene.
Three weeks later, Hutchinson is attending a society wedding when he is shot. Two weeks later, Scotland Yard is called in, but there's already a second victim: Tory candidate Herbert Swift is shot as he begins a speech before the community at Cambridgeshire.

I very much enjoy Charles Todd’s books, because the early 20th century era is created with so much authentic period detail and the descriptions of the settings are always vivid and evocative. Hunting Shadows is filled with eerily atmospheric descriptions of the Fens, and the curling fog creeping over the flat landscape is the perfect background for a mystery. First off, I love the Ian Rutledge Mysteries!! It is hard for me to put the book down once I start!! Love everything about this series and the characters. Just 50 pages in but Charles Todd's Ian Rutledge series never disappoints.
Outstanding as always. Charles Todd's ability to create atmosphere is so good, right up there with Anne Perry. The story is always good but the writing is excellent. Now I have to wait for the next Ian Rutledge. ...more

The only reason I'm giving 4 stars to my favorite book character is because the mystery involved three cities. It was a bit confusing for me to try to remember who was who in which city. Sorry. Also, I didn't like the bad news Rutledge received at the end of the book. Made me sad.
