August 1920 — A Major Clayton has died and one of the servicemen who knew him planned to go the funeral - only he finds himself unable to do so when he sees another attendee, Capt. Hutchinson, on the scene.
Three weeks later, Hutchinson is attending a society wedding when he is shot. Two weeks later, Scotland Yard is called in, but there's already a second victim: Tory candidate Herbert Swift is shot as he begins a speech before the community at Cambridgeshire.

Inspector Ian Rutledge, haunted by his experiences in the trenches during World War I, is dispatched to the Fen country to hunt a deadly sniper. Two men are dead--a military officer shot at a wedding, and a solicitor standing for Parliament killed at a campaign event. Rutledge hunts intensively for a connection, because the deaths are certainly by the same hand. But Try though he can, the connection cannot be found. It isn't until he pieces together several passing remarks by assorted witnesses

The Mother/Son team that writes under the pen name have successfully juggled two terrific, recurring historical mystery/thriller sagas. Most recently, the Bess Crawford series has introduced a World War I British battlefield nurse and the many adventures her and her wealthy family have gotten involved in during this bloody war.
The other series, now with its 16th release, is the superb Inspector Ian Rutledge series. In HUNTING SHADOWS we find Rutledge on a case that takes place in some small Brit ...more

In order to do this he must cope with the unusual landscape, the odd weather, and reluctant witnesses. This book reminded me of what a joy a well-written book is. Our talented authors (yes, Charles Todd is in reality two people) have delivered another engrossing story of Inspector Rutledge, who is still dealing with PTSD (not acknowledged back then) from WWI while solving a murder in England. Though the plot is very well developed, and kept me intrigued, it's the character of the detective himself that I love most about this series.

I received an Advanced Readers Edition from a Good Read's giveaway.
As always Inspector Rutledge is kept busy looking for an elusive killer with much driving about the English countryside this time in an area I'd not heard of before called the Fens. Lots of good character development and diversions from the real killer with a surprise thrown in toward the end. Maybe not such a surprise if you were really paying attention earlier in the story.
Another good one from the mother/son Charles Todd. ...more
