I was a bit disappointed by the book, perhaps because I already knew many of the main themes, but was unprepared for the endless description of marine plants and animals. Verne creates a world through these descriptions that would probably have been more interesting in the 1860s when it was unknown, but humdrum to someone who grew up watching Jacques Cousteau. There is only one word to apply to Jules Verne… Genius. But if that was all it took then I would be giving the book 5 out of 5.
The book suffers because it’s Victorian, because everything is so dramatic in the Victorian world. And so, I can only give it 3 out of 5
