Next level world building. My husband and I listened to this first book in the Mistborn series together on audiobook. A wonderful experience... I highly recommend!

This was amazing!!! I had heard so many good things about Brandon Sanderson but had never read anything by him. After a ton of booktube videos and tumblr post saying great things about his work, and the covers of this book was interesting. The magic system was fascinating, you learned about it along with our protagonist. The writing was so good, I cared actually was invested in the characters, every death.... It hurt a lot. I finally finished The Final Empire! I have wanted to pick up this series for the past several years and I have tried numerous times to read it but I would always lose interest very early. I will say for anyone wanting to pick it up, by page 200 you are fully in the action and plot of the book, keep reading! My thoughts on The Final Empire are a bit mixed. I feel like I had a lot of hype coming into reading this book and I think it got built up bit too much for me.

I finally finished The Final Empire! I have wanted to pick up this series for the past several years and I have tried numerous times to read it but I would always lose interest very early. I will say for anyone wanting to pick it up, by page 200 you are fully in the action and plot of the book, keep reading! My thoughts on The Final Empire are a bit mixed. I feel like I had a lot of hype coming into reading this book and I think it got built up bit too much for me.
Things that I loved about The Final Empire!
- The characters are really the heart and soul of this book. Vin and Kelsier and Sazed and the whole thieving crew are some of my new favorite characters. Vin's growth throughout the book is just incredible and Kelsier is the best mentor and has struggles and is morally grey in many areas. Sazed is hands down my favorite character,I am fascinated by his story and the stories of the Terrisman people. I am so hopeful that we will dig into more the Terrisman people in The Well of Ascension.
- The magic system of Allomancy is the most unique magic system I have ever read. It is definitely complicated at first and took me a good portion of the book to finally feel like I understood what all was happening but it is so unique and fully fleshed out. Also I am a sucker for a good training montage and I got a lot of that in this book!
- I love that this world has so many layers and depths to it, everything gets revealed slowly over time as our main characters are learning and gaining new information and I love how that ties into them only have the knowledge that they have been allowed to posses under the Lord Ruler. So "info dumps" only happen for the most part when our characters are also the first to learn new information and it progresses with the plot very well.
- I loved that the team didn't always succeed and that they often failed and had to try again it rang really true and raw.
The things that I didn't enjoy as much
- The pacing of this book felt incredibly slow and then incredibly fast in different parts, it would speed up in a section and then slow down again for another 150 pages and then another event and so on. I personally had a hard time maintaining my engagement with the plot because of this pacing.
- The book spends a lot of time building up the heist and all the little details involved in it but we didn't get as much time watching it all play out as I would have liked, I would have loved an extra 50 or so pages at the end of the novel just going to more of how everything played out, but I am hopeful that we will see more of that in The Well of Ascension.
- I loved watching Vin grow and develop but the balls and parties for me were some of the least engaging parts to read and a good chunk of the book is spent with her at the balls.
Overall I did really enjoy reading The Final Empire, and I am excited to continue reading this series and I'm hopeful that we will get more mythology and quests as the series progresses! ...more
