It surprises me how I was so excited when I first came across this book. As Memoirs, biographies and autobiographies are not my favorite sub-genres among non-fiction books. I have a habit of researching about something I am about to start. For example, before starting to read this book I did some research on the internet and most of the reviews on this book were very good. Thus, I decided to read it. Memoirs adrenalize me as I never tire from reading tales which involve real life experiences. It It surprises me how I was so excited when I first came across this book. As Memoirs, biographies and autobiographies are not my favorite sub-genres among non-fiction books. I have a habit of researching about something I am about to start. For example, before starting to read this book I did some research on the internet and most of the reviews on this book were very good. Thus, I decided to read it. Memoirs adrenalize me as I never tire from reading tales which involve real life experiences. It helps me have a view of life from someone else’s perspective. I fancy published works which are true stories. Always a nice feeling when I start reading a book, keeping in mind that the events in the book are real. My excitement however dies as I flip one page to the next. Not because the book is boring, ( it’s too absorbing) but due to the events in the life of the author as written in the book. His is a sorrowful story, a sadly written tale by an innocent boy who witnessed all forms of atrocities during the civil war that for years, tore Sierra Leone apart.
Ishmael Beah is a renowned author and human rights activist who was born in Sierra Leone. He tells his story as a teenager during the civil unrest in his country in “A Long Way Gone: Memoir of a boy Soldier.
In A Long Way Gone, Ishmael Beah tells a riveting story: how at the age of twelve, he fled attacking rebels and wandered a land rendered unrecognizable by violence. By thirteen, he'd been picked up by the government army, and Beah, at heart a gentle boy, found that he was capable of truly terrible acts.
On the rating of 1 to 5, while being the best and 1 being the worst I rate this book a 4.5 out of 5. The only reason why I subtracted the half points is because of the violence and scariness. For example, The violence in A Long Way Gone is constant and unbelievably brutal. Rebels, as well as the soldiers with whom Ishmael and his friends fight, kill indiscriminately -- women, children, babies. Apart from this one bad thing I suggest reading this book especially to the people who like this genre. ...more
