The Faithful Executioner is full of well researched and engaging information regarding the profession of executioner in early modern Germany, where it specifically follows the long career of Frantz Schmidt. Harrington does a good job piecing together Frantz's journal and other documents to show Frantz's journey, despite the lack of information. I found myself invested in Frantz's life and was eager to discover whether he restored his family's honor by the end of the book.

Group leader is making me write this review. I did not enjoy the book. Readers who might expect gore or sensationalism will instead find thought provoking questions about justice, morality, and the human condition.
