I want to give this book a solid four stars solely for the last 1/4 of the story and the entirety of the Manon POVs, when things were the most interesting. This beast of a book has melted my brain with the number of different POVs given, yet I've enjoyed all of them. I want to give this book a solid four stars solely for the last 1/4 of the story and the entirety of the Manon POVs, when things were the most interesting. This beast of a book has melted my brain with the number of different POVs given, yet I've enjoyed all of them. Well, mostly all of them...

I found myself constantly wanting Aelin to go kick rocks with the number of times she contradicts herself. One moment it's "O, there is hardly anything left of the man I once loved (Chaol)" then another she's telling him "You're the same person as you were before." Don't get me started on the repetitive dialogue. If I have to hear "Do you just like hearing yourself talk?" I swear...No Aelin, that's YOU. Or my favorite "Everything had changed, yet nothing had changed." How many times are you going to say that, and what does that even mean?! Her inner narrative is filled with these musings that attempt to be wise and philosophical but really just ends up adding no lasting value. I don't have the same complaint against the other POVs.

Another issue I have is how weakly Sorscha and Nesryn were used as filler plot devices in order to symbolize how the characters are moving on from past relationships. Was I supposed to feel something for these characters? Because I really don't. Not enough time and one on one well written interactions took place in order to form an emotional connection to them or the romantic aspects.

Okay, back to the good bits, and it might seem crazy to rate it four stars after ranting as I am-- but as I said, I did enjoy the action that was delivered and freaking love Manon and her arc. Also, the evil villain and all the lore that goes behind defeating it is complex and intriguing. I know that there is still a ways to go before the world will be right, but the ending of Queen of Shadows was pivotal and epic. ...more

Overall, a great continuation of Aelin and the gang’s journey. I do feel this could have been edited down a bit; there’s a hair too much ‘fluff’ but that’s being picky. I can’t wait to start my first ever tandem read next.

This is one of my favourite series - just now a whole year to wait until book 5!

As much as I love the arcing storyline it's really the relationships between the characters that Maas does so exquisitely. So many strong, complex female characters in this series who are brilliantly written, flaws and all.

Only negative from this book was I didn't like Chaol for large parts. But signs towards the end that hopefully in the next instalment he'll be back closer to the character I really liked in the sec ...more
