Re-read January 2024 in preparation for CC3. Still 5 stars. This book has *plot*. There are so many twists and turns and side characters and warring parties my head is still spinning even the second time. I’m so glad I re-read, and I was able to pick things up this time that I missed the first time. Like Bryce seeing the Book of Breathings in the library… how interesting *side eye*. Lehabah is possibly my favorite side character ever. “My friends are with me and I’m not afraid.” *starts crying*

I laughed, I cried, I withheld from throwing up
Quotes:
“Bryce whipped her head around to look at the Gate as Danika’s voice sounded again. ‘Light it up, Bryce.’”
“Then Bryce was laughing and sobbing as she screamed, LIGHT IT UP, DANIKA! LIGHT IT UP, LIGHT IT UP, LIGHT IT UP!’” — cue me, sobbing
“Hunt hissed to Bryce through his gritted teeth, thunder cracking above him, ‘I heard what you said. What you waited to admit until I was almost dead, you fucking coward.’ His lightning surged into her, send ...more

Wow. SJM has done it again.
A completely different series and I have fallen in love with these characters just as I did in ACOTAR.
This book had me crying almost as much as A Court of Mist and Fury.
The first half I severely struggled, I wasn’t sure this series was for me, but as always SJM redeems herself in the second half of the book. Every one of these 799 pages was worth it.
This book is full of loss, but also love and loyalty in all different forms. The love of a mother and father, the love ...more

The book was a mess…
I enjoyed its weirdly connected plot points and interesting characters but I feel like the story lost its potential when SJM tried to include ever single fantasy element existent… why are we combining werewolves with fae and vampires and angels and witches and where are the mermaids coming from?
The story would have been much more enjoyable focusing on one or a few of these elements only which would’ve also allowed for a better structured storyline that wouldn’t feel so lengt ...more
