Wow, that was a lot. I feel like I read three books. But it was so enthralling, I couldn’t put it down. This was so dark- the atrocities it was based upon were so beyond heinous, it was hard to read. But the author did such a good job at bringing you in from the start and keeping you curious. I’m heartbroken and nervous to start the next one. I can recognize that this was a very, very good book and also feel beaten up by it 😅 i read a lot of books and have gotten pretty good at moving on ...more

This was brutal to read, but in a good way
4.5⭐️The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang is a dark, intense fantasy inspired by Chinese history. The story blends mythology, politics, and real-world war horrors. Rin’s journey is intense and often disturbing, showing the true cost of power and revenge. Kuang’s writing is sharp, emotional, and unafraid to show the darkest sides of war.
It’s not an easy read, but it’s gripping and thought-provoking. I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys morally complex fantasy with real-world depth.
