"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"
-That's what reading this book felt like. A car crash that you can't turn away from. R.F. Kuang does a great job of making June seem slightly likeable, then she does something horrible again and you have to put the book down to take a breather, but then you get sucked back in because overall you want to hope that DEEP deep down June isn't that horrible of a person. ...more

The writing is fantastic, but the storyline didn't do it for me. The author clearly knows how to write, as this novel is very well crafted, but it just wasn't my cup of tea. It does raise some interesting points about the publishing process, cancel culture, and racism in the career field. Maybe if I were an author, I would have enjoyed it more, but the narrative just didn't resonate with me.

Honestly that was wild, I have idea what I just read. How can someone write a character so well that I hate them as though they are real. I almost DNF’d this book at the start cause i literally couldn’t stand June, but that when I realised how good it was, we were meant to hate, the psychotic untrustworthy narrator. The more she lied the more confused I got and honestly I’m not sure what was true and what wasn’t in the end. I just wish the ending hadn’t been so speculative..

I’m a little torn with how I feel about this book. It stressed me out at times, and I don’t like feeling stressed. I also felt bad wanting the main character to get away with it and live happily ever after. I also kind of want another book where she goes full evil/crazy and blackmails the lady who blackmailed her.
