My first, but definitely not my last, R.F. Kuang book! She did such a good job with making you hate the characters, yet feel bad for them at the same time. I kept putting it down just out of irritation from June. Usually hating a character, nonetheless the main character, would make me read a lot slower or even just DNF the book, but I kept wanting to read the next thing June would do. The ending left me wanting so much more!

The writing is fantastic, but the storyline didn't do it for me. The author clearly knows how to write, as this novel is very well crafted, but it just wasn't my cup of tea. It does raise some interesting points about the publishing process, cancel culture, and racism in the career field. Maybe if I were an author, I would have enjoyed it more, but the narrative just didn't resonate with me.

Honestly that was wild, I have idea what I just read. How can someone write a character so well that I hate them as though they are real. I almost DNF’d this book at the start cause i literally couldn’t stand June, but that when I realised how good it was, we were meant to hate, the psychotic untrustworthy narrator. The more she lied the more confused I got and honestly I’m not sure what was true and what wasn’t in the end. I just wish the ending hadn’t been so speculative..
