I re-read this book in preparation for the third book in the series being released soon, and I had forgotten how utterly boring this book is - or, at least, the first two-thirds of it. Once Feyre goes under the mountain things pick up, but until then I had to force myself to continue the book - even though I knew, this time, that it was going to get better. I was stuck at 55% for months last time, and it took every bit of reader strength to power past that point this time around, too.

I don't really buy the relationship between Tamlin and Feyre - and not just because I've already read the second book and know what is going to happen there. The romance often takes a backseat to other elements of the story (world building in particular, the mysterious "blight" on magic, the action, etc). In the end, this leaves Tamlin/Feyre feel very...unnatural, at least to me. Although they did verbally spar once in a while with one another, I never felt any chemistry between them.

Two "side" characters end up stealing this book in my opinion, the first being Lucien. Tamlin comes across as pretty bland, but Lucien was scarred (yessss) and sarcastic and hiding a very angst-ridden heart (double yessss). I think Lucien felt more dynamic to me than Tamlin. I never "shipped" Feyre and Lucien, but they made a pretty badass pair of frenemies.

The second, of course, is Rhysand, who was probably the most interesting character to me. (view spoiler)

Honestly, I went on to the second book because I love Lucien (who isn't around all that much in the second book) and Rhysand (who IS around).

I'm lukewarm when it comes to Feyre. (view spoiler) But other than that, I never grew to care for her character.

I'm not enthralled with this book, but I did enjoy the second book more, so it's kind of a necessary evil. Next time, if I ever choose to re-read this book again, I'll probably start once Feyre is under the mountain, because besides some of Rhysand's skulking around and Lucien's hilariousness, there isn't much before that chapter that I actually enjoy. ...more

As I read- I found what many had mentioned, there were hints of Beauty & the Beast. With that being said- I really did love this book.

I didn’t want to like it. I didn’t want to start the fantasy genre. But alas- here I am. I own the first two books and the next three are in my Amazon cart.

I am looking forward to the rest of the story.
I hope to find out why Booktok is telling me that Tamlin is bad🤷🏻‍♀️

A great fantasy read. It was a great escapist storyline with faeries and humans and treacherous challenges. It’s a bit mature for a teen read, not quite a full on romance novel scene, but I like to be aware when heading into a story.
