This was my first Agatha Christie and I was impressed. In only 192 pages she managed to create a psychological crime thriller without at any stage it seeming rushed. There were plot twists and red herrings as you would expect in this genre and yet none felt contrived. Since Christie never indulged in graphic details associated with the crimes, this book can be read by both those wanting a cosy read and YA readers.

I've come to the conclusion that I like Agatha Christie's books more in theory than in practice. While the plots, characters and settings sound right up my alley, inevitably the reading enjoyment fails to materialise beyond "yeah, it was good". It may have something to do with having watched film and TV adaptations of most of her books prior to having read them but the books end up feeling rather flat to me. Sorry, Dame Agatha, it's not you, it's me.

While I initially missed being able to follow one of my favorite sleuths, Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple, I was still dazzled by this standalone mystery. Christie's compelling characters and sophisticated plot shine while red herrings abound. In fact, Christie is one of the few mystery writers who consistently keeps me guessing until the end, and Crooked House was no different. Suspenseful and satisfying. Highly recommended!
