3.5 stars, rounded up because it's really nice to see diversity, inclusivity, and women building each other up.
Cinderella Is Dead takes Cinderella, adds a totalitarian regime (including the leader's portaits in every home and propaganda pamphlets), sneaks in a hint of a serial killer mystery, and shakes it all up with a healthy dose of fun. Verdict: A unique retelling of Cinderella with diverse characters. Over the years, the legend led to a patriarchal society that places little value on women.
Cinderella has been dead for two hundred years.

The book was good, though it could have been better. As other reviewers have said, the characters are shallow, and the world-building is lacking. But the premise of queer black girls working to overthrow the patriarchy is very appealing and worth giving the book a shot.

It wasn't a bad read, but not the first thing I would recommend to someone either. I am happy that we were in ...more
