I usually have a love-hate relationship with magical realism literature but I really liked this one. It was charming and intriguing. I would recommend to read the author's note at the end for sure if you read the book. ...more

Ooookaaaay... I want to love this. I should love this, because magical realism is a favorite of mine in general, the synopsis sounds great, everyone seems to love it, etc. But I just can not get into this. I forced myself through about 80 pages, decided to take a break, and then ended up cleaning for several hours on and off to avoid reading more of it. I should not find folding and putting away laundry and scrubbing my bathroom preferable to reading a book, so I'm DNF-ing it, at least for now. ...more

When I first started this book, I had a hard time getting into it. But at about the halfway point, I completely fell in love with the characters and the story. The writing in this book is so beautiful and I immensely enjoyed all of the magical realism elements. I would highly recommend this for fans of Bone Gap by Laura Ruby!
