One of the best books I've read this year. Lauren Groff takes on an ambitious story with an intriguing form (and surprises galore) and knocks it out of the park. There's so much to ponder in the wake of these deep, deep characters and the marriage that they shared. So much of this novel will linger long past the final page. Brilliantly written. Stunningly sensuous. And painfully honest.

Beautiful prose, beautifully written, but I agree with many others that this book was pretentious. The overall plot wasn't engaging and the characters were all unlikable in a way that wasn't endearing for the novel. However, it is one of the more well written novels that I have read in a long time.

Glad I read reviews of this book before I stopped reading mid-way through. The first half is a sleeper. Second half picks up the pace considerably, but the end was weak. Not crazy about Groff's writing style, although some of it was very clever. Too many questions left unanswered for my taste.

Hrmmmmm. The second half of this book was infinitely more interesting than the first half, and surprise surprise, it was the part that focused on Mathilde instead of Lotto. Mathilde's section doesn't work without all the background, but it did at times feel like it was a lot of backstory to get through to get to what I thought was the real meat of the thing.
