The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian tells the story of a high school age, Native American boy who is an excellent student and is advised by one of his teachers to leave the reservation. “You kept your hope. And now, you have to take your hope and go somewhere where other people have hope.” This means leaving his school to attend an all white school. When I found out that this book was on the banned and censored list, I picked up a copy at the library. I wanted to see of what the critical, the judgmental, the book banning zealots, were afraid. With a book such as this, so rich with opportunities for discussion, a more valuable use of their time would have been to read this gem with their child or grandchild. This is definitely a book aimed for teenaged boys. So I suppose I should have expected all the juvenile rambling. I shouldn’t have been annoyed with the way Junior talked. Yet I couldn’t seem to help it even as I recognized that I was just not the right reader for the book. And I couldn’t stop that from influencing my early decision to give it 2 stars. Funny, with some sharp and painful truths tucked among the silliness. So, basically like eating a ball of crushed glass dipped in chocolate. One more, please.

Recommended reading for anyone's who's struggled with a hyphenated identity, and especially if you've tasted poverty and/or grief.
