I'll say it again, I believe Ruta Sepetys is one of the greatest writers of our generation. Perhaps it's because she is writing about a part of history I was unaware of until she wrote about it. Or maybe it's because she fills her narrative with vivid detail in a way few writers can. Or it could be the way she handles history and her characters with the consummate respect both deserve. Masterful!
When she writes I'm there. I feel and live her scenes.

The title and cover of Salt to the Sea focus on the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff, so I guess talking about it doesn't count as a spoiler. I loved the way the author moved back and forth between the four main characters. Wonderful way to develop each character while weaving them together. This story is historical fiction which takes place during World War II. I know, another WWII book, but this one tells of the struggles of young people in a war. As well as the sinking of the Wilhelmina Gustloff.

While the story is compelling, the style of jumping from character to character makes the book choppy. It also kept me from enjoying them as individuals.
