A Darker Shade of Magic definitely gives readers a magic system that is just waiting to consume. Its magic that is dark, that must be used with caution, that's bloody and requires sacrifice. Mostly, its dangerous and waiting to strike. And the villains just keep coming. The book hardly lets you take a breath once the plot starts moving.

This might be a 3.5-4 star once I’ve had some time to think on it. I’m not sure yet who my favorite is from this book. It definitely got better as it went on.
