This book is definitely one of favorite fantasy books that I have ever read! I really enjoyed the world that the author created and I thought the pacing of the book was very well done. I absolutely loved the main character and how strong of a female protagonist she was. This book does not focus on romance which I appreciated because it instead focuses on our female main character and her experiences as the Queen of the Tearling! Overall I would definitely recommend this book and I am looking for ...more

I just love a bad ass female heroine. Kelsey has many of obstacles to overcome in this book and a large learning curve to master in such a short period of time. I was rooting for her the entire time. Erika Johansen didn't waste my time with over developing of characters and landscape and I appreciate that. Can't wait for the third book. ...more

I gave this book 4 1/2 stars

Kelsea always knew that she would ascend the throne at 19. But she knew little of her mother’s reign as queen. For 19 years she had been safe and hidden from the world by Barty who showed her love and nature and Carlin who showed her strength discipline and justice. She has much to learn about the world of Tearling and about being a leader. But first she has to survive her trip to the throne.
This is a great first book in a new series for me. Definitely rooting for Kel

The author has created a new world full of royalty, magic, intrigue, Robin Hood like characters, and all the things we love from the tales of the King Arthur days. I am hooked!!
