This was a devastatingly beautiful book with some very difficult, heartbreaking reading. I find historical fiction really majors in these adjectives for literature. I am so glad I finally got around to reading it because it has been on my to-be read list for so long. This is an emotionally heavy book that will haunt readers well after the last page. The characters were written so deep and the flow of the storyline leads to a short meeting between Werner and Marie-Laure that has lasting effects. ...more

What makes a book great; complete engagement, your emotions flowing, mysteries unfolding at just the right pace, evolving characters you care about, interesting learning, a compelling story, Vivid, clear writing--the book seems to read itself to you. This is a truly great book!

I thought the writing and descriptions were beautiful. But I found the book very slow moving. It was also very confusing because the author kept jumping back and forth in time in telling the story.
