Now I know why many had a problem with the ending.... :/
This was a 'mixed reaction ' book to me. I can't genuinely say that I loved reading it, I can't either say that I did not like it.
What I liked about the book was the lyrical writing, the descriptions, the lethargic prose which soothed my turmoil at reading a war story. I loved Marie and Werner, the two protagonists, belonging to enemy countries.

I loved this book for so many reasons. But it was especially beautiful to me as I thought of my daughter's limited vision since she lost sight in one eye. The symbolism behind the title, made me think about all the light, that surrounds me each day, that I may not be seeing. I have read many WWll stories, and they are all horribly beautiful in their own way. But I especially appreciated seeing the war through the eyes of a German soldier, as he struggled to find his place in the horrific circums

Lives up to the buzz surrounding this novel in every way. Beautifully constructed as an inevitable overlap between two very different stories from two sides of World War II. Also rich with sadness and a longing to take back one's own life in the face of war and evil. Reminding the reader that young, sensitive souls were dragged into this horrible event.
