I re-read this book, because I remembered reading it as a child, and couldn't remember why I didn't like it very much. Oddly enough, while I'm giving this book four stars, mostly for the sake of nostalgia, I still don't like it, though I understand it better now as an adult, than I did as a child.

This is one of my favorite books! I just finished reading it to my daughter. Yes it might be a little over her head right now but my hope in introducing it to her at a going age is that she will want to read it when she gets older and understand it more. Right now it’s to share with her one of her moms favorite books while she cuddles with me to settle down for bed.

I read this when I was in middle school, and since I wasn't really a reader back then, I didn't understand it as well as I do as an adult. I just finished this for book group, and I LOVED it and its intricate exploration of meaning, love, and the importance of overcoming trials through weaknesses and vulnerabilities. I love Newberry award books. They always make my soul happy.

Re-reading this book was like tessering back to my childhood. This book helped sparked my love of fantasy and science fiction stories. Its the springboard for so many young readers and writers. Granted, there are many outdated references for modern readers. Sometimes the sentence structure could also use a bit of polishing.
