I've read a few books written by Lois Lowry but I've never read The Giver. I think I may have saw it at the library when I was a kid but the picture of an old man and a big gold medal on the cover probably put me off. I don't remember why I avoided books that had received the Newbery Medal when I was a kid.
I enjoyed reading the book. I'm surprised with myself because this book is intended for kids but it didn't feel childish for me. I only regret that I didn't read it when I was a kid.

The Giver is a dystopian novel that is thought-provoking, intriguing, and disturbing all at the same time. This will be coming to the big screen later this year. I highly recommend that everyone read this book.
Merged review:
The Giver is a dystopian novel that precedes (published in 1993) many of the young adult dystopian novels I've read over the past two years such as The Hunger Games trilogy. There are two other novels in the series by Lois Lowry, which I plan to read. The Giver is thought-pr ...more

Jona will learn horrible things about the past
and about the previous recver of memories. He will also learn
wonderful things about life before "the great sameness."
This book will move you to see a society progress so far

Although I read this quite a while ago it was worth a re-read for book club! I did not remember a lot and just discovered there are two more books that I am anxious to read! Imagine if our world becomes like where Jonas is from....a scary thought that the people have no memories of what we take for granted each day!
Still a masterpiece.
