What a shame to live in a world of sameness. Jonas has lived in such a world his entire life. Everything is planned out for all of the people in the community. A committee watches during their childhood to determine what their jobs will be once they become an adult. For Jonas, that was to be the Receiver. The Receiver is given all the memories of joy, pain, love, hate, happiness, sadness, sunshine, snow, color, and the list goes on. This is all the things that people no longer experience. No one ...more

I remember when I read this book back in 8th grade. It was my first taste of dystopian literature and it is probably the book that made the greatest impact on me.

Jonas is a definitely a character that is eager for change, challenge, a completely new way of seeing the world once he gets a little taste of the things that once were and wants to find out what is out there in the world that he never new about before he accepted his Honor. It is indeed a book worth reading. It show how our uniqueness is beautiful and if we were all the same... everything and everyone pretty boring. The take the author took on this is definitely interesting.

Although I read this quite a while ago it was worth a re-read for book club! I did not remember a lot and just discovered there are two more books that I am anxious to read! Imagine if our world becomes like where Jonas is from....a scary thought that the people have no memories of what we take for granted each day!
