A magical look on Ancient Egyptian society. It also hits on points which I find so fascinating about the society, "...they built the pyramids, they created the first great nation state. Their civilazation lasted for thousands of years... Next to the Egyptians, the Greeks and Romans were babies." The book plays on the gods and uses them as energy for magic. It uses them as entities like mortals but not divine like God. This sets up an intriguing new and refershing tale. Riordan spellbindingly wri A magical look on Ancient Egyptian society. Next to the Egyptians, the Greeks and Romans were babies." The book plays on the gods and uses them as energy for magic. It uses them as entities like mortals but not divine like God. This sets up an intriguing new and refershing tale. Riordan spellbindingly writes as both male and female characters as the siblings tag-team the narration though this can get a little confusing too as to who's voice is saying "I" sometimes. Riordan's chapter titles and sense of humor are very similar to his "Percy Jackson" series especially the journey Carter takes. The details about Egyptian society thrown in here and there were fun and fascinating! Like "Series of Unfortunate Events," the author plays up on the story in the "warning" in the beginning telling how he is translating a recording to the "author's note" in the end. The ending was done very well and definetly not nearly as predictable as parts of the first "Percy Jackson" books. There were many balls in the air for this ending (the biggest surprise being Zia). I think Riordan has made himself another modern world filled with ancient gods and "blood of the Pharoah" children. Though Egyptians gods are often two to three animals combined in one figure, Riordan weaves them in brilliantly without making them seem too silly. Yes, the preteens poke a little fun, but its done well so the reader accepts these strange creatures! Even though the ending was a cliffhanger for an exciting new series, I felt that the story was a complete tale of the children on their journey to save their father. I very much enjoyed the tale with its nonstop action and discoveries! Riordan really outdid himself with this one, and I look forward to more stories! Even though the book is about as big as three "Percy Jackson" books, it a page turner!!! It never gets too long! In fact, you always want a little more. Great story! ...more
