I had read this book first in my childhood. This time I listened to the audio book which is actually a BBC series dramatization which I downloaded from librivox.com. I enjoyed the story. I enjoyed the different character voices, the intonations, the background sounds and music. It was much better than watching, as I could imagine Oliver and others much clearly than if I just saw the actors on TV. I would suggest this audio book to my son when he grows up a bit more and I hope he'll enjoy it as m ...more

Not my favorite book by Dickens. I agree with an earlier review - the songs helped. Of course I'm writing this while watching Oliver! right now so who am I to judge? But nothing is quite so poignant as listening to "Where is Love" while typing a book review.

Oliver Twist is such a DARK story, and if I hadn't known that Dickens himself was well acquainted with the workhouse I'd accuse him of being overly melodramatic. Oh heck, I may as well say he's overly melodramatic. Everything has to be so nea

I loved this book. My previous knowledge of this story comes from an awesome musical movie, which I love, but it leaves out so much of the heart of the story. I love the way Dickens captures human nature with its varying faces. The sweet innocence of Oliver is contrasted with the cunning, street worldly group of thieves. I think it hilarious how Dickens mocks charitable establishments, and people who are supposed to care for the poor, but who really of selfish and uncaring. What a fantastic read ...more
