What Members Thought

I had read this book first in my childhood. This time I listened to the audio book which is actually a BBC series dramatization which I downloaded from librivox.com. I enjoyed the story. I enjoyed the different character voices, the intonations, the background sounds and music. It was much better than watching, as I could imagine Oliver and others much clearly than if I just saw the actors on TV. Not my favorite book by Dickens. I agree with an earlier review - the songs helped. Of course I'm writing this while watching Oliver! right now so who am I to judge? But nothing is quite so poignant as listening to "Where is Love" while typing a book review.

I loved this book. My previous knowledge of this story comes from an awesome musical movie, which I love, but it leaves out so much of the heart of the story. I love the way Dickens captures human nature with its varying faces. The sweet innocence of Oliver is contrasted with the cunning, street worldly group of thieves. I think it hilarious how Dickens mocks charitable establishments, and people who are supposed to care for the poor, but who really of selfish and uncaring. What a fantastic read
