I keep seeing comparisons between this book and various others. But one I haven't seen mentioned is Robert Heinlein's Tunnel in the Sky. A bit old for the current YA market - seventies, maybe even sixties, but The Hunger Games reminded me of this throughout. Kids trying to survive in an "alien" environment.

Surprisingly I liked this a lot. Well-written, pacy, internal logic of story more-or-less holds water - at least nothing leaped out at me as being patently impossible or improbable. I rather l

HOLY COW!!! I absolutely loved this book!

Here's a brief (spoiler free) plot summary:

Every year, the Capitol requires the 12 Districts of Panem to submit one boy and one girl tribute to compete in the Hunger Games, a fight til death. District 12 is home to Katniss Everdeen. Upon the day to submit tributes, she nervously comforts her younger sister, Prim, for the upcoming event. Suddenly, Katniss Everdeen finds herself volunteering to be a tribute in place of her sister Prim. Immediately, Katniss

I admit, I picked this up and read this because I wanted to see what all of the hype was about. Everyone I know was talking about or reading this, or had seen the movie. I am funny. In the beginning, Katniss seemed kind of fickle to me, in terms of response to male attention. She has this guy

Wasn't sure I would like this, with all the hype and the film coming up, but I ended up loving it! She very cleverly manages to keep you reading, by just adding enough intrigue to make you need to know what's coming next. Although there were no huge surprises, she manages to twist the story to make you hungry for more. I'm now looking forward to the next one, with so many questions! What does Gale think of her performance? How are her family? What is the Capitol going to do to get her back? Can ...more
