I read the book and simultaneously listened to the audio performed by Anna Massey
Wow! Why hadn’t I read this before? Classic psychological thriller and the epitome of the gothic novel.
Our narrator begins her life as companion-in-training to the insufferable Mrs Van Hopper, who is spending the season in Monte (Carlo, that is). There they come across Mr Maxim de Winter in the resort restaurant. He is a well-known widower who “can’t seem to get over the loss of his wife.” Events lead the young nar ...more

I loved this book. It was atmospheric, creepy, addictive. The characters, even though almost none of them were likeable, were fantastic. Mrs Danvers ... a deliciously horrible woman. The narrator was infuriating, but so real, with her constant imagined scenarios and insecurities.

I read this for the Hardcore Literature Book Club - well listened to it as read by the fabulous Anna Massey actually - and it is just as wonderful as I possibly could have imagined. I know I've seen the movie but long ago and I don't think the movie could ever do the book justice. I am looking forward to the Book Club lectures later on this year. Such a fabulous and heart-wrenching, dark and gothic story. I did occasionally want to slap the second Mrs. de Winter silly as she spun her totally ung
