I was very much looking forward to reading a great historical novel. Instead, I found it to be cliche-driven, melodramatic chick lit. Very disappointed. There were some glaring and some not so glaring errors in the facts. I've read many accounts both autobiographical and fictional about this time period and Hannah needs to become more committed to doing her research if she wants to continue writing historical novels imho.

This is probably one of if not the best book I've read this year. Yes, it's about World War II, but this is the first book I've read where focus is on the women and the women's war. It's a powerful story about the things women went through during the war and how women fight the war in their own way. It's about courage, hope, bravery and love.

Maybe it was because it wasn't a French but an American who told the story, which to me was noticeable throughout. Or just the fact that it was written in English, with actual meant-to-be-English and German bits thrown in.

This is one of the best books I've ever read. I wept like a baby when I finished. The ending was predictable, yet surprising. I was happy, sad, angry, yet understood. Very well written and I hope to read more from Kristin Hannah in the future.
