A bit of a confused mess at times, just one damned thing after another, & it took me a while to settle into it, however, there were some amusing moments that kept me reading & I enjoyed it, on the whole.
I mostly felt irritation with Max, who must be, what, 30ish, if she has her doctorate, going on 15, & keeps drifting off when people are speaking to her - not old enough to be an eccentric professor, not young enough to get away with it. This is the first book in a series called The Chronicles of St. Mary’s which follows a group of historians as they travel through time and enjoy a cup of tea upon their return. Their job is to chronicle the past in the most accurate way, by observing it in person. The main character, Dr. Madeline Maxwell, known as Max, is incredibly brilliant and has a wonderful sense of humor. She has something dark in her past but it doesn't seem to have affected the woman she's grown into.

This book was fun but also a total mess (just like main character Max). The ideas are zany, the characters are hilarious, but the plot somehow managed to sometimes move at breakneck speed and other times go nowhere at all (there’s a time travel pun in there somewhere).
Am curious to read book two because there’s some great ideas buried somewhere in here and one can only hope things improved following the author’s debut (this is a long series, so it has to have gotten better? Right?)

A very cool way to see history, through time and space as well as the eyes of one woman. My interest waxed and wained a little through the chapters. A really fun concept and well written, if a little long i found. Still will give the next one a go later on, not sure if i can handle more of st mary's at the moment.

4.5 stars. I love this book. Granted, I'm a bit of a time travel junkie, but this book takes it in a different direction from those that I've read. I am greatly looking forward to the next in the series.
