What Members Thought
Novel set in dystopian Chicago wherein there are five factions of people with specific personality characteristics: Abnegation (selfless), Candor (honest), Dauntless (brave), Amity (peaceful/kind), and Erudite (intelligent). These factions were formed to stop the greed that comes from too much power and to help prevent war. In theory, everyone is to live in harmony, but the different factions tend to disagree with eachother and to "war" amongst themselves, although up to now it has only been a w

This had an interesting, but flawed premise. The idea that people fit so neatly into a particular box, and it's super special to have multiple personality traits is so ridiculous and just doesn't work. Nurses can't be kind, selfless and intelligent? Firefighters can't be brave and selfless? Despite the premise, the book was still entertaining and kept my attention.

I loved this book. It's a good book if it's 2 am and you have an alarm set for 6:30 am, but you consider just staying up to keep reading...twice. It reminded me quite early on of both the Matched and Delirium series. I enjoyed both of those, so why wouldn't I like this? YA dystopian fiction just seems to be my thing.

This wasn't something I would have chosen to read - dystopian is not my thing - but someone gave me the audiobook so I went ahead and listened to it. Emma Galvin's narration was good for the story but quiet and monotonous. A lot of violence - much of it gratuitous to my way of thinking - and a lot of filler - seemingly in order to create a series out of something that could have been done in one or two books. But the characters and the world they live in were well developed, if disintegrating. I

Divergent takes place in Chicago years after a society changing disaster. In order to survive, the isolated population has divided itself into five factions, Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Erudite (the intelligent), Amity (the peaceful), and Candor (the honest). Each faction is especially suited to serve the societal roles assigned to their faction. If someone fails to conform or be accepted to one of the factions they become ostracized and relegated to the lowest tier of soci

I just could not get into this book. I had never read dystopian, unless I did in high school and did not know it then. Not sure if Brave New World or Lord of the Flies is considered dystopian. I don't think back in the 80s, the word "dystopian" was even used. I debated whether to even read this and for a long time did not. I decided to try listening it on audio, but after listening to several chapters, I decided this just wasn't for me.

After reading this for the second time I found that I liked it better this time around. I normally don't like reading books twice but this one was an exception to the rule.
