My Philip K. Dick Project

Entry #35 - The Unteleported Man / Lies, Inc. (written Nov. 1964-Mar. 1965, published Sep. 1964)

Wow! Now this is a MESS. A glorious mess, yes, but still a mess.
In fact, I'd been kind of dreading dealing with the whole The Unteleported Man / Lies, Inc. problem. (See, I don't even know what to call it.).
Actually, scratch that. For the rest of the review, I'll be using Lies, Inc. as that was what Dick titled it during his final rewrite. For PKD fans who are interested i

Yeah it is a mess with two books being jammed together but I like the theme of the one book and the weirdness of the other.

"Acrid smoke billowed about him, stinging his nostrils." This line is the one said to begin the craziness that is Lies, Inc. But not its beginning. PKD's 19th novel started as a shorter work, The Unteleported Man. However, it has been published in many forms—some after Dick's death. Well, how can i put this - i really liked the first part of the book. That’s why it gets two stars.

It's about Rachmael ben Applebaum, which until the new Whole Germany takes over world power, was doing a fine business transporting humans in space. But the Germans invented a one-way teleport which made Rachmaels business obsolete. The teleport migrates humans from an overpopulated earth to a planet far away. The destination is called Whale's mouth.

All assets from Rachmaels company has been sold o

One of the worst PKD books of all time. The only ones that come anywhere near to being this bad are some of his very very early works...and they are bad for different reasons. Sad because the premise to Lies Inc sounds so promising.

This was probably a 2.5 star book to me. The first half of the book was pretty good. Then, about halfway through, there is some kind of acid trip thing and the plot of the book is just a hot mess. After about 40 pages of weirdness, Dick returns to the plot at last and comes to a moderately satisfying ending. I knew when I signed up for a Dick book that there was going to be some weirdness but holy crap. Quite strange but more than that...boring. I can live with weird but boring is unforgivable. ...more

This was a disappointment really. The book was a mess, to tell the truth. As always with Dick there were some great ideas, but the middle section which had been added afterwards, caused complete confusion. Probably should have been left in the novella form The Unteleported Man.

pages 1-73 and 173-201 very good... the in between 100 pages were so difficult to read. Ive enjoyed many an acid trip but that was just too bonkers for my liking.

2/5

I can't believe I'm going to say this about one of my favorite sci-fi authors: This is one of the most BORING novels he has ever written. Avoid at all costs. ...more
