A great read and, so far, one of the most accessible PKD novels I've read. It only gets weird and tripy late in the story, but when it happens you'd better buckle your seatbelt because it is WEIRD.

PKD’s view on mental health, race, and gender issues are a little out of date (this book was written in the 1950s I think) and some of the content would likely offend many readers. Nevertheless the concepts and ideas PKD raised about subjects such as autism, and schizophrenia were fascinating to me. I consumed the audio book version, the quality of the recording became very poor near the end of the book, ironically it actually added to the effect and I really didn’t mind.

Gubble, gubble, gubble! You can read the chapters in or out of order up to perhaps page 180. The story is a bit like Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-five. PKD wrote this in 1964 whereas KV wrote his in 1969. The two stories are similar in regards to revenge. Both stories involve time-travel and/or precognition.
The Vonnegut story is definately the winner. This is one of PKD's weaker works but it's full of humanity. PKD created a bunch of flawed people and set them in motion.

Some interesting ideas that sort of fall flat due to the pseudo science sci approach to mental illness, namely schizophrenia. One can imagine PKD reading something in a magazine back in the 60’s and getting an idea for a quick churn out. That said, there are still a few good twists and Dick’s life-on-mars series of stories and books always amuses. I love the teacher robots at the Martian elementary school and the casual infidelities of both husband and wife. The characters here all seem more unl
